Complex trauma and its sequelae as well as congenital deformities have always been a challenge to Orthopedic Surgeons. Post-traumatic complications like infections, non-unions and mal-unions are sure to stay with us for several years to come. Congenital and acquired limb deformities call for expert evaluation and management. This has led to the development of the new sub-specialty of Reconstructive Orthopedic Surgery. The specialty takes surgical care of complex trauma reconstruction, deformity correction and Joint replacements.
Internal & External Fixation Management Center
The Department of Limb lengthening & Reconstructive Orthopaedics headed by Dr. Krishnakumar, undertake to provide high-end quality care and cure in cases relevant to the specialty, of course at a cost affordable to common man. Complex trauma and Limb deformities are successfully managed at this Centre using internal and external fixation. The Centre effectively performs an encouraging number of joint replacement surgeries too.
Even though there has been a rapid advance in the field of internal fixation in recent years, external fixation still has a crucial role in the management of complex trauma and deformity correction. Ring fixators (otherwise known as Ilizarov fixators) as well as Limb Reconstruction System (LRS) have revolutionized Reconstructive Orthopedic Surgery since its invention by Sir Gavril Ilizarov in the latter half of the last century. With the addition of computer assisted hexapod correction systems, the procedure has become totally hassle free to the surgeon and beneficial to the patient. This Center was the first to Introduce Ortho–SUV, the Russian Computer Assisted Six-axis Correction System, in the state and till date a good number of external fixation surgeries of all the three varieties — Conventional Ilizarov, Ortho-SUV and LRS — have been successfully performed, at the Centre.

One-roof Orthopedic Care
Apart from providing round-the-clock comprehensive care for all orthopedic conditions, the Department performs routine trauma surgeries. An arthroscopy surgeon and a spine specialist serving in the Department attend to their respective specialty cases making the Department’s medical and surgical expertise almost complete. The full-fledged Physiotherapy Department of the hospital looks after the post-surgical rehabilitation of the patients. The Department is, in sum, an all-under-one-roof orthopedic care facility designed exclusively from the patients’ comfort and convenience angle.
